After two years of developing the character Kamelulu, I felt the world around it deserved a deeper story. That idea led me to write a children’s book titled Kamelulu and the Lost Shine. At the same time, I created a short animated film based on the story. The animation made the project especially personal, as the narration is done by my daughter Ayla.

I also saw it as an opportunity to create a book that I could read together with my children and talk about with them. At the time of making the project they were six and eight years old, which felt like the perfect age to share and discuss the ideas behind the story.
The story follows Kamelulu, a small character who suddenly loses its shine. Confused and searching for answers, Kamelulu goes on a journey to understand what happened and how to find that shine again. The story explores themes of self confidence, identity and acceptance, and the realization that our uniqueness is something to embrace rather than hide.
On a deeper level the project is also connected to a personal experience of mine. I have lived with psoriasis, a skin condition I have lived with for many years. Growing up with something visible like that can influence how you see yourself and how you think others see you. Through Kamelulu’s story I wanted to translate those feelings into something children can understand in a gentle and imaginative way.
If the moment comes that we decide to release the book, I will share the news here and on my social media channels. Stay tuned.
My children and I were born and raised in the Netherlands, so this story is also told in Dutch. Watch the Dutch version below.
